As a nation we are obsessed with food; we eat socially, we eat to celebrate, and we eat to treat. But we don’t spend enough time considering where our food came from and how it ended up on our plate. Nor do we consider the impact of that journey on our health.

Did you know that organic food has a wealth of benefits for your health, body, and the environment?

September is Organic Month – the perfect time to eat fresh and give your body a break from chemicals and hormones used to treat non-organic foods. Going organic, either full- or part-time, is one of the best ways to love your body. Organic products are free from herbicides and pesticides, so not only are they delicious but they’ll ease the burden on your liver.

The (over)loaded liver

Your liver is your body’s natural toxin filter. It does the detoxing for you, but it is possible to overwhelm it and affect its ability to filter out the nasties.  From environmental toxins like herbicides, pesticides, and chemicals in plastic water bottles, to poor nutrition, high stress and excessive consumption of caffeine and alcohol, the things we eat, drink, and use can have a negative impact. 

When the liver is loaded with toxins, it can cause side effects which are commonly mistaken as symptoms of being hormonal.  Sluggishness, fatigue, acne, depression, anxiety, brain fog, mood swings, weight gain, and changes to your cycle might actually be signs of a loaded liver!

How will going organic help?

The way your food is grown or raised can have a huge impact not just on your body, but your mental and emotional health, and the environment too. Here’s why:

  1. Organic foods are fresher and contain more beneficial nutrients than their conventionally grown counterparts. This is because they don’t contain preservatives, which synthetically extend its shelf life. Fresher more nutritious food, grown as nature intended, means we can reap more vitamins and minerals to nourish our bodies.
  2. Organic produce contains fewer pesticides. Standard produce contains chemicals like herbicides, insecticides, and synthetic fungicides, and their residues can remain outside and inside our food. This can cause a build-up in our liver.
  3. Organic food is also free from genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and genetic engineering. GMO and GE foods are those whose DNA has been altered unnaturally, most commonly to develop resistance to pesticides or to produce an insecticide. Do we really want or need that in our bodies?
  4. Organically raised animals are not given antibiotics, growth hormones, or fed animal by-products. In fact, a 2016 European study showed that levels of certain nutrients, including omega-3 fatty acids, were up to 50% higher in organic meat and milk than in conventionally raised versions. Organically raised animals tend to have access to the outdoors and more space to move around, which help to keep them healthy. So eating organic is also kinder for the animals.
  5. Organic farming practices reduce pollution and soil erosion, conserve water, increase soil fertility, and use less energy. In short: farming without synthetic pesticides is better for the environment and nearby birds and animals, as well as people who live close to farms.
  6. Bonus fact: Some studies indicate that organic foods reduce – and even relieve – symptoms of allergies!

Your body will thank you! You can expect to wake up feeling more refreshed in the morning, with clearer and brighter skin. You’ll probably also notice far fewer sugar cravings, and you won’t feel as bloated.
